Dhyan Chand

The Indian hockey wizard got the name Dhyan Chand because he used to practice in the moonlight; his real name was Dhyan Singh. He was known for his extraordinary goal scoring feats in addition to his earning 3 Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936 during an era when India dominated the hockey field. He joined the army at the age of 16 and retired as a Major in 1956.

The residents of Vienna have set up a statue of Dhyan Chand with four hands and four hockey sticks in honour of his mastery of the game.

The greatest all time cricketer, Don Bradman after watching Dhyan Chand remarked, ‘You score goals like runs.’

India honours him by celebrating his birthday on 29th August as National Sports Day.
