RK Narayan

Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami was an Indian writer best known for his works set in the fictional south Indian town of Malgudi. Along with Mulk Raj Anand and Raja Rao, Narayan was one of the leading authors of early Indian English.

His brother was the famous cartoonist R K Laxman. Narayan’s mentor and friend was Graham Greene who was instrumental in getting publishers for his first four books. Malgudi was first introduced in ‘Swami and Friends’, which along with ‘The Guide’ remain his best known works. In a career of over sixty years, he won many honors and awards.

The Sahitya Akademi Award for ‘The Guide’ in 1958; Padma Bhushan-1958 ; A C Benson Medal by Royal Society of Literature- 1980; Padma Vibhushan-2001. He received honorary doctorates from University of Leeds-1967; University of Mysore-1976; Delhi University- 1973.

He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1989. Born on October 10, 1906, Narayan passed away in Chennai on May 13, 2001, aged 94.
