William Butler Yeats, Irish poet was one of the foremost figures of twentieth century literature. He was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival along with Lady Gregory, Edward Martyn and others. He was the first Irish to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923. Yeats most famous collection of poems is ‘The Tower’ published in 1928 which contains several of his famous poems like Sailing to Byzantium, Leda and the Swan and Among School Children. In addition to poetry he also wrote many plays. He was preoccupied with physical and spiritual masks as well as the cyclical theories of life. Yeats’ mystical inclinations informed by Hinduism, theosophical beliefs and occult provided the bases of much of his late poetry.

He died in Menton, France, on 28 January, 1939 aged 73.
