Phawara, Aug 24 : Tension prevailed in this Punjab town, when hundreds of Dalit activists, led by Lok Insaaf Party leaders Simranjit Singh Bains and Jarnail Nangal, took out a protest march from Shri Guru Ravi Dass Mandir, demanding resignation of Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Parkash, in local Urban Estate here, on Saturday.

Raising slogans against the Union government, the agitators demanded the Minister to either declare a date for RaviDass Temple in Tughlakabad, New Delhi, or resign from the BJP government. Police had to face a tough time controlling the mob, who were stopped around 200 mt away from the Minister's residence.

Superintendent of Police Mandeep Singh, SP (Investigation) Manpreet Singh Dhillon and Deputy Superintendent of Police Manpreet Singh Dhillon, along with Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Phagwara Jai Inder Singh, remained present throughout the route, during the march. A scuffle ensued between the protesters and the cops, as Police installed barricades, to stop the protestors.

The situation took a different turn, when LIP leader Simranjit Singh Bains suddenly got unwell and felt suffocated.

Later, the protest near the Minister's residence could be lifted, when the administration informed that the Minister had proceeded to Delhi, due to former Union minister Arun Jaitley's death.  They strongly condemned the police action on Dalits in Delhi on Friday. The agitators then submitted a memorandum to local SDM Jai Inder singh, before lifting the dharna.(UNI)
