Farmer held for allegedly cultivating poppy crop in Punjab

Patiala, Mar 28: A farmer was arrested for allegedly cultivating poppy crop and nearly 19 kilograms of the crop was seized at Sadh Majra in Patiala, police said.

The accused has been identified as Sukhpal Singh.

According to police, the crime came to light on Wednesday, when raids were conducted in the village and farms.

During the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that he took half acre of Panchayati land on rent to grow vegetables and planted the poppy crop along with the vegetables, police further said.

The farmer has been booked under NDPS Act and further investigations were underway, police added.

Meanwhile, MP Dharamvir Gandhi defended the farmer and said that he cultivated corn and not poppy crop.

He further said that he will soon sit on a dharna along with farmer organizations to free Sukhpal Singh. (UNI)
