Moga, Mar 9: Seven farmers organisations here on Saturday decided to launch an indefinite dharna at Patiala on March 25, in protest against the state government's inaction in returning of farmers' blank cheques from banks.
These cheques are being misused by the banks and registering criminal cases against the farmers, the organisation alleged. After a meeting of the various organisations here, Sukhdev Singh Kokri, General Secretary, BKU Akta Ugrahan said that farmers' dharna would be a peaceful agitation. Despite the assurance given to the bankers’ committee by the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the process was underway, still there was no signing of the returning back of the blank cheques, he said.
The farmers also demanded implementation of the swami Nathan commission so that farmers could get reasonable price of their produce. The farmer organisations were also critical of the state government claim of Rs 4736 crores worth loans waived off, benefiting 5.85 farmers.
About the debt relief scheme for farm labour and landless farming members by providing major relief to 2.85 lakh farmer labours, farmer organisations alleged that this is a cruel joke with the farmers as such announcements made by the state government earlier at the time of elections.
