Puducherry, May 24 : Liquor shops in the Union Territory are expected to open tomorrow (Monday) with the Lt.Governor Kiran Bedi giving approval for the same. It may be noted that liquor shops in the UT were closed on March 23 with the commencement of the lockdown to contain CoronaVirus (COVID 19) spread. When the lock down entered the fourth phase, relaxations were given and liquor shops in adjoining Tamil Nadu were opened.
Following this, the Puducherry cabinet took a decision to open the shops on May 18. However, with the Lt Governor directing to impose COVID tax at par with Tamilnadu, there was a difference of opinion between the cabinet and the Lt. Governor and the opening of the liquor shops here was delayed. After effecting changes in the file as directed by the Lt.Governor, the file was again sent to her and she gave approval for the opening of liquor shops in Puducherry and Karaikal regions of the union territory. The GO in this regard is expected to be issued today and the shops opened tomorrow. Official sources said that a separate file for Mahe and Yanam regions will be forwarded to the Lt. Governor for approval. (UNI)
