Puducherry, Dec 3 : Parliamentary Secretary to Chief Minister K Lakshminarayanan has urged AICC interim President Sonia Gandhi to raise the issue of conferring statehood to Puducherry in the current session of parliament.
In a letter to Ms Gandhi on Monday, a copy of which was released to media here, Mr.Lakshminarayanan said it will be more effective if she takes the support of all opposition parties on the matter. He said Congress Party can take full credit to the demand for conferring Statehood to Puducherry by leading all the opposition parties under her leadership till the central government gives an assurance.
Apart from Statehood, Mr Lakshminarayanan also urged her to raise the urgent issue of inclusion of Puducherry in the 15th finance commission recommendation for devolving the funds from the Central Government to Puducherry as is the case of other states.
This is a long pending demand of the government and all political parties besides people here to include Union Territory of Puducherry in the Finance Commission as it is treated as a state in all other matters like GST. He said Puducherry is also an UT with legislature with powers to enact laws as in the case of other states. (UNI)
