Heavy rain drenches Pondy for second day

Puducherry, Dec 1 : Incessant heavy rain continue to lash Puducherry and its sub-urbs for the second day on Sunday disrupting normal life in the union territory.

Though Puducherry was experiencing rain for the last one week, it intensified in the last two days and the North—east monsoon became vigorous. Because of the heavy rain several low-lying areas were flooded and water entered into several houses.The official machinery has been geared up to pump out water from the low lying areas.Traffic was also affected as the roads were flooded and damaged. Being Sunday and a holiday,the intensity of the traffic was low here.The water sources in Puducherry are fast filling up as the flow into the tanks and lakes increased considerably.

Puducherry received 11.4 CMs of rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 0830 hours on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Mannadipet commune panchayat commissioner today requested the people living on the banks of the Sankarabharani river to shift to safer places along with their cattle as the Veedur dam in Viluppuram district of Tamilnadu could be opened at any moment due to the heavy rain in Villupuram and Vikravandi areas.
