406 ponds rejuvenated in Pondy in two years

Puducherry, Nov 4: True to the spirit of the Government of India’s missions, namely in sanitation, water and environment protection, last two years has seen a massive upsurge in synergy to strengthen and promote all such causes in the union territory.

According to a release from the Raj Nivas on Sunday, together Puducherry and Karaikal disticts with the combined effort of administrative and community, succeeded in identifying, recovering and discovering hundred of ponds/water bodies. As many as 406 ponds in Puducherry and Karaikal were rejuvenated and both districts desilted 804 kilometers of irrigation channels with the help of MNREGA and corporate donor support where machinery was required. Eleven urban channels (70 Kilometers) were also cleaned to prevent flooding. Puducherry model of water rich is “support in kind without any exchange of money with government.

In all 30 corporate and Philanthropists along with several NGOs and volunteers made this possible.But for them the available government funds were not sufficient to meet the scale needed. Geo mapping of water bodies is being done by Neeri, National Environmental Engineering Institute, a Nagpur-based NGO. Information of all ponds discovered and recovered is being placed on Raj nivas and Puducherry collectorate web site. (UNI)
