Puducherry, Sep 23 : Prohibitory order under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been promulgated in Puducherry region of the union territory from September 22, the District Electoral Officer said on Monday.
Puducherry District Magistrate and District Electoral Officer, Shashvat Saurabh, IAS in his order said that this is in view of the by-election to the Kamaraj Nagar assembly constituency and will last till the election process is over. The order will ban carrying of any firearms, spears, swords, brickbats, lathis, he said and directed the licenced arms holders should deposit it in the nearest police station.The station house officers were directed to impound such weapons if the owners are failed to deposit.
Mr Saurabh said that this prohibitory order will not be applicable to those communities, who are entitled to display weapons by long standing law,custom and usage, to those nationalized/private banks where arms are necessary to safeguard cash chest and also to sports association which are registered with the National Rifle Association.
Meanwhile, the DM in another statement cautioned government servants of disciplinary action if they were found actively taking part in election campaign along with political parties. He said the model code of conduct of election is already in force and added that section 129 of Representation of Peoples Act 1951, bars government servants to act for candidate or to influence voting during election and contravention of this provision penalizes the offender with imprisonment which may extend to six months or fine or with both.
He requested the secretary and head of the departments to advise their subordinates accordingly, adding that any violation of the directions of the election commission by any government servant will be viewed very seriously and penal action will be initiated. (UNI)
