Puducherry, Aug 29 : Chief Minister V Narayanasamy informed the Assembly on Thursday that the government would take steps to name Chakklier community as Arumthathiyinar.
Replying to a point of order moved by AIADMK member A Anbazhagan, Welfare Minister M Kandasamy said following a court order, the Cabinet took a decision to name Chakklier as Arumthathiyinar and forwarded the file to the Chief Secretary. However, the Chief Secretary in turn forwarded it to Lt.Governor Kiran Bedi and she sent it to the Union government and the issue is pending.
Mr Anbazgagan then said the High Court had given the elected government all powers and even after that if the Chief Secretary is sending files to the Lt.Governor, a contempt of court case be filed against him.
Intervening, Chief Minister said that all aspects would be studied and steps would be taken to name Chakklier community as Arumthathiyinar. (UNI)
