Puducherry, Aug 12 : Former Lok Sabha member from Puducherry Prof M Ramadass on Monday urged the chairmen of the 15th finance commission to recommend provision of Local Body Grants to the Union Territory.
In a letter to the chairman Ramadass detailed the financial crisis the UT is experiencing and said that the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs under the presidentship of Late Sushma Swaraj has unanimously recommended Statehood to the UT with special status in 2005 itself.
If that suggestion had been acted upon by the Government of India, Puducherry would have become a full fledged state and would have been automatically covered by the FC recommendations and nobody needs to knock at your doors for local Body grants now. Puducherry or the local Bodies of Puducherry would not be experiencing the present financial imbroglio.
It is the failure of the Government of India that has put Puducherry in a helpless and hapless situation. "Why should Puducherry suffer this injustice caused by the political negligence and apathy of somebody," he asked. (UNI)
