SC reprieve for Lt Governor Kiren Bedi

S.Murari

With the Cabinet of the Congress Government in the Union Territory of Puducherry set to meet on June 7, the Supreme Court said on Monday on a petition from Lt Governor Kiren Bedi ruled that no decision should be taken involving financial implications or on transfer of officials.

The vacation bench of the apex court of Justices Indu Malhotra and M K Shah, on an urgent plea made by the Union Government and the Lt Governor, said if the Cabinet took decisions involving financial implications or on transfers, they should not be implemented till  the next hearing on June 21 on appeals against the order passed by the Madras High Court last April that Lt Governor should not override the elected Government and she should not interfere with the day- to- day administration.

The Centre in its appeal, has said the Puducherry Lt Governor cannot be equated with the Delhi Lt Governor and the high court order has brought the administration to a standstill.

It has said the Puducherry Lt Governor has “greater discretionary power” and “ a special responsibility towards the Union Territory which is under the overarching control of the President of India”.
