Puducherry, Jun 2: Deputy Speaker Sivakozhunthu will be declared unanimously elected as Speaker of the Assembly during the session beginning here on Monday.
When the deadline for filing nomination papers came to a close at noon on Sunday, Sivakozhunthu was the only candidate who filed the nomination paper on behalf of the Congress-DMK alliance.
The Opposition parties which demanded cancellation of the election as adequate time was not allowed, kept away from filing nominations and are likely to boycott the election on Monday.
Last evening they submitted a memorandum at the Raj Niwas urging Lt Governor Kiran Bedi to intervene and cancel Speaker's election.
Meanwhile, Bedi is rushing back to Puducherry on Sunday.
Congress member elected from Oulgret MNR Balan will be Deputy Speaker, party sources said.
The election was necessitated as Speaker V Vaithilingam resigned and contested the April 18 Lok Sabha election and won it. (UNI)
