Bhubaneswar, May 19 : Odisha today reported a record 102 positive cases,one more casualty and 30 recoveries as the state completed over one lakh covid 19 tests. The total covid positive cases in the state jumped to 978 with five casualty and 307 recoveries.
As many as 666 covid positive cases are undergoing treatment at various covid hospitals in the state and 866 persons are in hospital isolation. Official sources said for the first time a police personnel in the state tested covid positive. A constable with the Armed Police Reserve (APR) on return from leave was tested positive for coronavirus. The 36year old police personnel has no symptoms of coronavirus, He was however, had come in contact with a worker from outside the state. The constable has been moved to the Covid care facility and the authority has started his contact tracing.
Health and Family Welfare Department sources said one 75year old from Cuttack suffering from serious comorbidities and chronic pulmonary disease was admitted to AIIMS Hospital in Bhubaneswar. The patent passed away within a few hours of admission and tested covid positive.The covid death has now gone up to five as earlier, two each from Bhubaneswar and two Surat returnees in Ganjam district have died of coronavirus.
Odisha has been witnessing a sharp rise of covid cases since May 3 last with the arrival of stranded Odia people from other states. So far official sources said 1,91,925 odia people have returned to the state and their number will rise further as thousands of people arriving every day from other states. In fact 15,773 Odia people have returned to Odisha today. The corona virus has in the meanwhile, spread to 23 of the total 30 districts in the state and with fresh 102 cases,the total number has gone up to 978,a majority of them reported from five Red Zone districts such as Ganjam,Jajpur,Balasore, Khordha and Bhadrak.
Among the 102 fresh positive cases reported from eleven districts today Jajpur district accounted for 31 cases,followed by Jagatsinghpur(23)and Bhadrak(21). However,Ganjam district with a large number of Surat returnees continued to remain top in the covid cases with 307cases out of which 109 have been recovered. The other districts with high covid cases are Jajpur (168),Balasore(121),Bhadrak (95) and Khordha(64), Kendrapara (38) and Puri (33 ).
Official sources said today 30 covid patients were recovered and discharged from the hospital taking the total recoveries in the state to 307. While 20 covid patients were recovered from Ganjam, five were reported from Kendrapara district, two each from Bolangir and Bhadrak and one from Nayagarh district. The sharp rise of covid cases in Odisha has been attributed to the return of stranded migrant workers from West Bengal, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile, the Odisha government claimed that it had crossed the one lakh sample test till yesterday as 1,00,032 samples were tested so far in the state including 4536 test on Monday.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik who has been emphasizing upon ramping up the State's COVID19 testing facility to contain the spread of Coronavirus, today expressed happiness that the State has crossed one lakh COVID-19 test milestone The state government claimed that a majority of covid positive cases were reported from the quarantine centres, containment zone and form primary or secondary contact of a covid positive case. Out of 102 positive cases reported as high as 97 were reported from the quarantine centres and five from local cases.The government, however, had ruled out any community transmission in the state.
On the report of stranded workers from other states leaving their home by walk, the Chief Minister has directed the Commerce and Transport Department to ensure that no migrant shall walk on the soil of the state and they should be safely transported to their border destination. The government claimed that 15,685 Temporary Medical Centres/Camps have been readied in 6798 Gram Panchayats of the State with a total 6,89,602 beds to provide COVID-19 health services in rural areas. The state government has made 21 days institutional quarantine and 7 days home quarantine mandatory for all those returning to Odisha from other states. (UNI)
