Bhubaneswar, May 12 : As many as 23 new Covid cases were detected in Odisha today from five districts, taking the total tally in the state to 437. Official sources said, altogether 46 new cases were reported in the state during the last 24 hours, 42 of them reported from quarantine centres, two each from the containment zones and other places. A majority of the positive cases were either Surat returnees or West Bengal returnees.
Till date, 68,057 samples were tested in the state out of which 437 were positive, 85 of them cured and discharged from the hospital and 349 active cases are under treatment at various Covid hospitals. Sources said today the majority of 15 cases were reported from Balasore district, a Red Zone. They included 13 Surat returnees and one West Bengal returnee. The district has now 57 positive cases of which 11 have been cured and discharged. The Ganjam district with three more positive cases, occupied the top position in the district tally with 157 cases followed by 64 in Jajpur district including the three fresh cases reported today. The Coronavirus has so far spread to 21 of the total 30 districts in the state.
However, five districts such as Ganjam (157), Jajpur (64), Balasore (57), Khordha (50) and Bhadrak (31) together accounted for over 80 per cent of Coronavirus positive cases in the state. Barring Khordha, all the four districts are categorized as Red Zone. In Khordha district, only the Bhubaneswar Municipality Corporation (BMC) has been declared as Red Zone as all the 50 positive cases were reported from the state capital only. Puri and Kendrapara districts which had in the past reported Covid cases but later declared as corona free have now reported Covid cases with travel links to West Bengal and Surat. While Puri has three active cases, Kendrapara district has as many as seven active cases. The coronavirus recently spread to two new districts such as Angul and Boudh with the arrival of stranded Odia returnees to the state.
East Coast Railway (ECoR) sources said till May 10, as many as 24 Odisha bound Shramik Special trains have arrived in the state carrying the stranded Odia people from various states. Five more trains arrived in the state yesterday and five more will arrive today carrying the stranded Odia people. The state government had made institutional quarantine compulsory for 21 days for all those arriving in the state either by trains or buses The authority today clamped curfew in and around in Champua railway stations in Bhadrak district as two Shramik Special trains are arriving today with the stranded Odia migrant workers and other people. The curfew will be in force for 24 hours from 2 PM today to help the administration to relocate the Odia returnees in their respective panchayat for institutional quarantine after their arrival of the Shramik Special trains.
