Amid 60 hours shutdown in three districts, Covid 19 cases touch 90 in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Apr 24 : Amid 60 hours complete shutdown in three districts to contain Corona virus, Odisha reported one more Covid positive case taking the total number to 90.

The state government clamped 60 hours complete shutdown in Bhadrak, Balasore and Jajpur districts from 10 PM last night to contain the spread of corona virus in view of a sudden rise in positive cases in these three districts.

The three districts together had accounted for 33 of the total 89 covid positive cases in the state when the government announced 60 hours complete shut down.

Official sources today said one more person from Bhadrak was detected positive with Corona virus today taking the tally in the district to 12 and 90 in the state.

The Health and family Welfare department said a 40-year-old man from Bhadrak district with travel history to West Bengal was tested positive adding that the contact tracing and follow-up action are being undertaken.

The two other districts Jajpur and Balasore where shutdown was imposed last night also had so far reported 12 and 10 positive cases respectively.

A majority of the 34 positive cases reported from these three districts within a span of a week with travel history to West Bengal , prompted the state government to clamp 60 hours complete shut down and seal the borders with West Bengal.

The authority had deployed nearly 27 platoons of police force and barricaded several entry points from West Bengal in a bid to check the influx of Odia people returning to their native villages in the three districts.

The government estimated that several thousands of people have reportedly entered these three districts bordering West Bengal during the lock down period clandestinely carrying the Corona virus from West Bengal.

State Chief Secretary Asit Kumar Tripathy said the government has taken some extraordinary steps during the shutdown period to identify the persons who have returned from West Bengal and put them in government quarantine for 14 days.

Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan has appealed to the people of the three districts to stay inside their houses and co-operate with the district administration during the shutdown period. Meanwhile, the district authority had started sanitizing all the public places in the three districts as a precautionary measure and decided to triple the sample collections during the shutdown period.

The State saw a record number of 2,474 COVID-19 RT-PCR tests on April 23 last.

With the fresh detection of one positive case, the Bhadrak district administration today notified one more containment zone in Basudevpur block.

The Chief Secretary had asked the people of the three districts to cooperate with the administration in its fight against the Covid 19 and appealed to the people who have returned from West Bengal to voluntarily come forward and stay in the government quarantine for 14 days.

He warned strong legal action if any returnee from West Bengal did not cooperate with the local authority in preventing the spread of coronavirus in the locality.

Official sources said out of 90 positive cases in the state,33 persons have already been recovered and discharged from the hospitals.While only person has died ,56 people are undergoing treatment at various Covid hospitals in the state.(UNI)
