Police officers to check crime against women in Bhubaneswar-Cuttack

Bhubaneswar, Jan 02: The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack commissionerate police today appointed 246 female Special Police Officers (SPO) from 30 institutions to curb rising incidents of crime against women.

The Commissionerate of Police office sources here said the SPOs were appointed initially for three months and would be given extension. The SPOs were conferred with the power of a Police officer and would act as eyes and ears of regular Police on the sphere of crime against women. The SPOs would not get any salary. They will assist police in case of eve-teasing and harassment of women and will inform police about such incidents for suitable action.

The SPOs will also provide necessary assistance to the victims. The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack commissionerate police will also soon set up a unified control room (UCR) for the control of crime in twin cities. Speaking at a function organized here to celebrate the 12th raising day of the Commissionerate of Police, Odisha DGP Abhay said the UCR would help check rising incidents of crime and ensure safety of the people. The DGP sought the complainants and the supports of the people to check the rising incidents of crime. Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi said the Commissionerate police headquarters will be named as Police Seva Bhawan. (UNI)
