Bhubaneswar, Nov 13: Opposition BJP and Congress today stalled the business of inaugural day of the winter session of Odisha Assembly demanding debate on atrocities on women and murder of Panchayat executive officer Smitarani Biswal.
Amidst uproarious scenes Speaker Surya Narayan Patro adjourned the House at 11.18 am till 3pm for lunch without transacting any business of the house. Soon after the Assembly passed the obituary reference on the passing away of three former MLAs and a jawan, both the Congress and the BJP members rushed to the well and demanded the question-hour session be suspended to take up discussion on rising incidents of atrocities on women and the death of Haridaspur PEO Smitarani Biswal.
The BJP has given a notice for discussion on the admissibility of a motion on women atrocities.The Congress members demanded a discussion on the death of Smitarani . But the Speaker ignored their demand and asked Agriculture and Farmers Empowerment Minister Arun Sahu to reply to a question.
When the Minister stood up to reply, the opposition members rushed to the well , shouted slogans and disrupted the proceedings of the house. The Speaker appealed to the opposition members to follow the procedures of the business of the house and participate in the question hour .
But opposition members remained adamant on their demand and continued their slogan shouting and protest inside the well of the house forcing the Speaker adjourn the Assembly at 11.18 am till 3pm. (UNI)
