Bhubaneswar, Jun 6: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) today constituted two enforcement squads for strict implementation of the ban on the use of plastic/polythene.
The teams comprised of officials of the State Pollution Control Board, Commissionerate Police, Forest Department and BMC will start functioning from tomorrow.
The enforcement squads were given power for seizure of banned plastic/polythene materials, imposition of penalty and fines, issuing show cause notices and pre announcement on not to use plastic/polythene within the BMC area.
The squads will be assisted by two policemen during the raids.
The Odisha government had banned sale, storage and manufacture of plastic in six cities on the birth anniversary Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, 2018.
The state government had targeted to make odisha polythene free by October 2020.
In the first phase the ban was imposed in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Sambalpur, Rourkela and Puri.
The Housing and Urban Development department and the Panchayatiraj Department were asked to implement it in urban and rural areas and the Forest and Environment was department was asked to monitor the implementation.
The implementation on the ban order however, slowed down and polythene and plastics were found used widely. The use of plastic and the polythene is likely to be reduced with the new order, BMC sources said. (UNI)
