One more senior BJD leader resigns, questions party functioning

Bhubaneswar, Mar 31 : One more senior leader and founding member of Biju Janata Dal(BJD) today resigned from the party questioning the functioning of the party affairs.
Former Minister Raghunath Mohanty, who yesterday resigned from the chairman of the Odisha Lift Irrigation Corporation (OLIC), today resigned from the primary membership of the party as well as the vice-president post of the party.
Earlier, BJD’s veteran leader and eight time MP from Bhadrak Lok Sabha seat Arjun Charan Sethi and his son besides another senior party leader and former Jajpur MP Mohan Jena also resigned from the party expressing their unhappiness the way the party is involved in the distribution of tickets.
All the three and their hundreds of supporters joined the BJP here yesterday in presence of Union Petroleum and Natural Gas minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Prior to that two sitting BJD MPs- Balabhadra Majhi and Pratyusha Rajeswari Singh had resigned from the party and joined the BJP which nominated Mr.Majhi to seek re election from Nabarangpur Lok Sabha seat.
Sources said all the senior leaders of the party had resigned after being denied party ticket to contest either the Assembly or Lok Sabha seat.
Another BJD leader and former Chairman of Puri Municipality Jayanta Sharangi also resigned from the party and joined the BJP. Mr. Sharangi was keen to contest the Assembly elections but the party did not consider him to field in the elections.
Meanwhile, Mr Ragunath Mohanty who resigned today blasted at the functioning of the party and alleged that it had diverted from the ideals of Biju babu on which the BJD was formed.
He alleged that the BJD is now being run by a group having vested interest and several senior and founding members were either ignored or humiliated forcing them to resign.
Mr. Mohanty was dropped from the ministry in 2013 after he was found involved in a dowry torture case filed by no other than his daughter in law Barsa Swony Choudhury.
A five time MLA from Basta seat, Mr. Mohanty was denied party ticket to contest the 2014 Assembly elections. He was, however, reinstated in the party and appointed as Vice President on March 16,2018. Later on he was appointed as Chairman of the Odisha Lift Irrigation Corporation .
