Naveen Patnaik likely to contest from Western Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Mar 17: BJD supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik who has been contesting from his home constituency Hinjli Assembly seat in Ganjam district since 2000 is now seriously considering a proposal to contest the ensuing Assembly election from Western Odisha.

Mr Patnaik himself said this to newsmen at Naveen Nivas after several party leaders from western Odisha and people from all walks of life urged him to contest the Assembly elections from any of the assembly seats in western Odisha.

A delighted Mr.Patnaik said, “the farmers, the women, the students, intellectuals and party leaders have requested me to stand from western Odisha and I am considering it very seriously,”Political observers however, said the BJD leaders wanted Mr Patnaik to contest the Assembly elections from Western Odisha to check the opposition Congress and the BJP who have made inroads in to the western parts of the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah and Congress President Rahul Gandhi have meanwhile, focused their campaign in Western Odisha in a bid to capture more assembly seats in the 2019 elections, taking advantage of the widespread resentments among the farmers community against the ruling BJD government.

BJD leaders and workers opined that if Mr Patnaik will contest assembly seat from western Odisha, they would be able to give a big check to both the Congress and the BJP in the run up to the Assembly elections.

If at all Mr Patnaik decides to contest the Assembly seat from western Odisha, it will be a big surprise as the BJD supremo had never contested two assembly seats in his 19 years long chief minister tenure and had confined to only Hinjli assembly seat in the Ganjam district in South Odisha.

Both the Congress and the BJP leaders said the BJD is not very much confident of its electoral prospects in Western Odisha and so wanted to field Mr Patnaik to play a regional card to win the votes of people of western Odisha.

They said Mr Patnaik is also very much scared of losing many assembly seats in Western Odisha this time and so a drama has been enacted by his party leaders today to propose him to contest the Assembly seat form Western Odisha. (UNI)
