Odisha minister resigns over his controversial statement on Pipili gang rape and murder case

Bhubaneswar, Jan 06 : Amidst criticism and protest demonstrations from Opposition Congress and BJP on his controversial statement in the Pipili gang rape and murder case, Odisha Agriculture and Panchayati Raj minister Pradeep Maharathy today resigned from the post.

The ruling BJD government was under tremendous pressure from the Opposition political parties who had launched a scathing attack on Mr. Maharathy, staged demonstration before his residence and also Chief Minister’s residence, demanding the dismissal of the minister and a CBI probe into the incident.

On December 25 last,Mr. Maharathy in his remark to the judgment of Pipili gang rape and murder case acquitting two prime accused for lack of evidence , had hailed the verdict of the court and stated that the the truth had finally prevailed and the victim got the justice.

Since then the women's wing of both Opposition Congress and the BJP staged demonstration before his official residence, hurled eggs, tomato and broom in protest of his controversial remark.

Both the BJP Mahila Morcha and Mahila Congress activists also attempted several times to gherao the Naveen Nivas, the residence of Chief minister Naveen Patnaik to lodge their strong protest, a CBI inquiry into the gang rape and murder and demanded immediate dismissal of the Minister.

Although the Minister tendered an apology for his remark on December 28 last but the opposition Congress and BJP continued their protest demonstration demanding his dismissal from the cabinet and a CBI probe into the incident to punish the guilty. (UNI)
