Bhubaneswar, Nov 22: In another tragic incident, a female elephant was crushed to death by a Goods train near Ramachandrapur village between Basantpur and Keonjhar railway station on Wednesday night.
Keonjhar Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Santosh Joshi said the mishap took place when a herd of elephant was crossing the railway track last night. The goods train from Joda rammed into the herd killing one female elephant in the spot while the nine other elephants had a narrow escape as by the time the goods train approached, they had crossed the track
On being informed about the incident, the Forest senior officials and Railways official rushed to the spot. The driver of the goods train has been booked for dereliction in duty as the forest department had earlier intimated the Railways about the movement of the herd.
Mr Joshi said the incident took place at about 2145 hours last night. The forest department, he said had already informed the railway control room at Khordha at about 1820 hours to issue notice on the movement of the herd in the area.
The DFO said the message issued was to put caution order from 1900 hours to 0600 hours next day to restrict train speed as there was possible elephant movement.
The Railway control received above caution order at 1848 hours and immediately caution order was in place. As per the preliminary report and statement if the driver, the driver received the caution notice at about 7 am. (UNI)
