New Delhi, June 4 : Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister Smriti Irani on Thursday lashed out at former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, saying that it was wrong to expect that a person who never worried about humans, to be bothered about an animal's death. She was referring to the brutal death of a pregnant elephant in Kerala which has evoked widespread condemnation.

Though the incident reportedly took place in Malappuram district of Kerala, the pachyderm died in the neighbouring Palakkad district. Lashing out at her rival candidate from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, which she successfully wrested from the Gandhi scion, Ms Irani told a television channel that that it was a matter of deep concern if killing elephants was a trend. The Union Minister also questioned as to why forest officials in the state allowed the incident to occur.

Taking potshots at Mr Gandhi, she attacked him over the elephant killing and said one who did not do anything in his old constituency, could not be expected to do anything for his new constituency, referring to his Wayanad constituency which he now represents, adding "it is wrong to expect from a person who does not worry about humans, to worry about an animal." Similarly, BJP MP Maneka Gandhi told reporters that the act of feeding a cracker-filled pineapple to the elephant was a deliberate one.

She said that it was not a cracker but a bomb which explodes on contact. Such was the explosion which killed the pregnant elephant, she remarked. Flaying the Kerala government, the former minister, who is a staunch environmentalist, said this was not the first such case of elephant killing in the southern state and 600 elephants have died in Kerala due to unnatural causes.
