Cyclone Nisagra expected to hit north Maha, south Gujarat coasts on June 3

New Delhi, Jun 1 : Cyclone Nisarga is likely to hit north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts on June 3 and both regions are on pre-cyclone alert, India Meteorological Department said on Monday.

A deep depression over East-central and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea is moving towards the south Gujarat and North Maharashtra and likely to intensify into 'deep depression', causing heavy rainfall in these areas. Cyclone Nisarga is likely to turn into a severe cyclonic storm by the evening or night hours of June 3, the IMD stated in its bulletin.

According to the Weather Forecast Division of IMD, the depression over East-central and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea moved nearly northward with a speed of seven kmph near latitude 13.2°N and longitude 71.4°E about 360 km southwest of Panjim (Goa),670 km south southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra) and 900 km south-southwest of Surat (Gujarat). ''It is very likely to intensify into a 'Deep Depression' over East-central and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea during next 12 hours and intensify further into a Cyclonic Storm over East-central Arabian Sea during the subsequent 24 hours.

It is very likely to move nearly northwards initially till June 2 morning and then recurve north-north-eastwards and cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar (Raigad, Maharashtra) and Daman during evening or night of June 3,'' IMD said. The central weather monitoring center further said that under the influence of the Depression, light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy falls were very likely over Lakshadweep area, north Kerala and coastal Karnataka, south Konkan and Goa on June 1.

The weather bureau has forecast light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls over Konkan and Goa on June 2 and 3. Similarly, light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and extremely heavy falls at isolated places over north Konkan and north Madhya Maharashtra were forecast on June 3 and 4.

In south Gujarat, light to moderate rainfall was predicted at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls very likely over Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli on June 3 and with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and extremely heavy falls on June 4 in these areas. It has also predicted for rough to very rough sea condition over East-central and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea during next 48 hours. It would become very rough to high over east central and southeast Arabian Sea and along and off Karnataka-Goa coasts during the next 48 hours.

It will be ''High to very High'' over East-central Arabian Sea along and off Maharashtra coast from June 2 and also very rough to high over northeast Arabian Sea along and off Gujarat coast from June 3. The fishermen have been advised not to venture into southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep area and along and off Kerala coast during next 48 hours; east-central Arabian Sea and along and off Karnataka-Goa coasts till June 3; east-central Arabian Sea along and off Maharashtra coast and northeast Arabian Sea along and off Gujarat coast during June 3 and 4.
