New Delhi, May 12 : Indian Railways has operationalised 542 "Shramik Special" trains across the country, of which 448 have reached their destinations while 94 are in transit so far. Altogether 648,000 passengers were transported in these Shramik Special Trains after the Railways conducted proper screening of passengers before allowing them to board the train. During the journey, passengers were given free meals and water.
These trains have ferried the migrants to cities like Tiruchchirappalli, Titlagarh, Barauni, Khandwa, Jagannathpur, Khurda Road, Prayagraj, Chhapra, Balia, Gaya, Purnia, Varanasi, Darbhanga, Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Jaunpur, Hatia, Basti, Katihar, Danapur, Muzzaffarpur, and Saharsa, an official release here said. As many as 221 of 448 trains transported migrants to Uttar Pradesh, followed by 117 trains to Bihar, 38 trains to Madhya Pradesh, 27 trains to Jharkhand, 29 trains to Odisha, four trains to Rajasthan, three to Maharashtra, two each to Telangana and West Bengal, and one each to Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Social distancing was being observed in these trains in compliance with the Ministry of Home Affairs order regarding movement of migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and other persons stranded at different places by special trains. (UNI)
