New Delhi, May 4 : The Congress, on Monday, hit back at the BJP-led Union government for accusing the grand-old party of playing politics in the name of migrant workers. AICC Organisation general secretary KC Venugopal and media wing head Randeep Singh Surjewala termed the accusation 'negative' and stated that it is not the time to do politics.
“Congress state units will pay to the state chief secretaries the cost of train travel of the migrants. The Prime Minister should shed his ‘false prestige’ and come forward in paying for travel of migrants seeking to return home”, they said. Mr Surjewala said the party’s decision to bear the cost of migrant workers’ travel was in the spirit of Gandhian service and no politics should be played on it. “It’s a matter of clear intent,” he said and added that the Congress would still welcome any government decision to bring migrant labourers free.
“We have already told state units to coordinate directly with state chief secretaries and railway officials. There will be no registration. We will provide the money needed. The process has already begun,” said Mr Venugopal. He further said that the Congress do not want to play politics in this. “This is not the time to play politics. Those who are having no money are unable to travel in these trains, that is why our Karnataka PCC has paid for them. This is there in Kerala, where migrants do not have money to pay", he added. Mr Surjewala, further criticised the government, and said, "Even today we urged the Prime Minister to leave the false prestige and utilise thousands of crores in Coronavirus PM Care Fund”. More (UNI)
