New Delhi, Apr 20 : Taking cognisance of the reported suicide attempt by an AIIMS dental surgeon last week, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Monday demanded an immediate inquiry and details of the action taken report at the earliest.
Following the incident, NCW has written to Health Secretary Preeti Sudan and to Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), expressing concern over the matter and requesting an inquiry into the alleged harassment. It said action should be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future. "Measures should be taken to ensure safety and security of women staff and doctors in AIIMS department," the letter said. According to news reports, the AIIMS doctor attempted suicide over "casteist, sexist harassment" allegedly by senior faculty members.
The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) of AIIMS have written to to Health Minister Harsh Vardhan against alleged inaction by the administration on complaints of caste and gender-based harassment. The woman doctor is in a critical state in ICU of AIIMS.
"We would like to bring to your kind notice a serious event of caste and gender based discrimination of a Senior Resident of CDER, AIIMS. The Resident has made repeated appeals to the Department, the Director and also has been represented through RDA, AIIMS to the administration," said the RDA's letter, seeking the minister's intervention in the matter. The letter alleged that despite multiple letters, there had been no adequate action to address this issue of grave concern leading the Resident taking the drastic step to end her life after losing hope of justice in this prestigious institute. The doctor had reportedly also approached the Women's Grievance Cell and SC-ST Welfare Cell of AIIMS as well as the National SC-ST Commission, but to no avail. (UNI)
