Former Finance Minister senior Congress leader P Chidambaram who was among the first to advocate a nationwide shutdown to check the spread of Coronavirus, welcomed the 21-hour nationwide curfew announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but said that the poor should be protected from ensuing hardship.
He has suggested a 10-point action in which he suggests that grant given to farmers under the PM's Kisan Yojaya should be doubled to RS 12,000, Those covered by the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee scheme should be paid Rs 3000 into their bank accounts. Likewise, the urban poor covered by the Jan Dhan scheme should have Rs 6000 credited to their bank accounts.
Chidambaram also said 10 kg of rice or wheat should be supplied free to all ration card holders for the next 21 days and it should be home delivered.
He also said all registered employers should protect the jobs and wages of their employees and the Government should reimburse the amount within a month.
He also suggested a five per cent cut in GST on all essential goods and goods of mass consumption for a a two months from April 1 to June 30.
