Gangawar asks states & UTs to utilise cess fund for welfare of construction workers

New Delhi, March 25 : With an aim to give relief and support to the unorganised construction workers during the 21-day nationwide lockdown, the Union Minister States for Labour and`Employment Santosh Kumar Gangawar on Wednesday asked the all Chief Ministers and Administrators of Union Territories (UTs) to use the ‘Cess fund collected by the Labour Welfare Boards in states.

In an advisory, issued by the Ministry of Labour, under Section 60 of the Building and Other Construction Workers Act, 1996 all State Governments and UTs have been advised to transfer funds in the account of construction workers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode from the Cess fund collected by the Labour Welfare Boards under the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) cess Act.

The Ministry also informed the states that about Rs 52,000 crore is available as cess fund and about 3.5 crore construction workers are registered with these Construction welfare Boards. The unrecognized construction workers depends on their daily wages and due to outbreak of COVID19, the Government has stopped all construction works in in the country. (UNI)
