New Delhi, Mar 23: The Home Ministry on Monday asked all states to ensure safety of people of North Eastern states and to take appropriate actions against those who have been involved in harassing the people of North Eastern region following the outbreak of coronavirus or COVID-19 in the country.
The Home Ministry in its order, asking all State's Chief Secretaries and Director Generals of Police, said that recently people from NE states have been facing harassment after the outbreak of this deadly disease.
There have been cases where people of Northeast including the athletes and sports persons have been harassed by linking them with COVID-19 which is racially discriminatory, inconvenient and painful to them”, the order said.
The order further said to take necessary and appropriate actions against them when reported and sensitized those places` where North Eastern people stay.
Delhi police has registered a case under section 509 of the Indian Penal Code against the man who allegedly spat on a Manipuri girl and called her "corona". The incident happened on Sunday night at Vijaya Nagar, Delhi. (UNI)
