New Delhi, Mar 20: The Supreme Court in the wee hours of Thursday, 'in a midnight hearing', dismissed a plea seeking stay on execution of Nirbhaya death row convicts.
A three judge bench comprising Justice R Bhanumathi, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice AS Bopanna dismissed Nirbhaya case convict Pawan Gupta's plea, saying that the scope of judicial review of the President's decision on mercy petition is very limited and any new facts regarding the moratorium not present in the petition.
Justice Bhanumati, while reading the judgment, on behalf of the bench, said, "The petitioner has not presented any concrete legal basis in his petition filed challenging President's decision to dismiss the mercy petition."
"Therefore the said petition is dismissed", the bench added. (UNI)
