Unnao rape case: Expelled BJP MLA Sengar convicted for death of victim's father

New Delhi, Mar 4 : A Delhi Court on Wednesday convicted former BJP leader Kuldeep Sengar of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the death of Unnao rape survivor's father. District & Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma convicted seven people including Sengar and said quantum of sentence will be pronounced on March 12.

The rape survivor's father expired in police custody on April 9, 2018 and 55 prosecution witnesses and nine defence witnesses were examined during the in-camera proceedings. Sengar has already been jailed for the "remainder of his natural biological life" for raping a minor in Unnao. The rape case that hogged headlines when the girl attempted suicide outside Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's home. The next day, her father died while in police custody at a local hospital. Her father was framed in an Arms Act case and arrested.

On the directions of the Supreme Court, the case was transferred from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi Court last year for trial. The trial court after hearing had framed charges against Kuldeep Singh Sengar, his brother, Police Station's in charge Ashok Singh Bhadauria, Sub Inspector Kamta Prasad, Constable Amir Khan and several others. The Court had directed administration to provide the necessary security to witnesses as well as the victim in the case. District & Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma on December 20, 2019 had sentenced Sengar to life imprisonment. (UNI)
