New Delhi, Mar 4 : President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday rejected the mercy petition of one of Nirbhaya's rapists, Pawan Kumar Gupta.
With today's rejection, all legal options available to the four convicted for the December 16, 2012 gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapist have closed and a new date for their execution will now be announced. The four convicts -- Akshay Thakur, 31, Pawan Gupta, 25, Vinay Sharma, 26, and Mukesh Singh, 32 -- have filed numerous petitions challenging their death sentence. The four Nirbhaya case convicts were earlier due to be hanged at 0600 hrs on Tuesday.
Expressing muted hope that their ordeal to see justice for their brutalised daughter would end soon, Nirbhaya's father told reporters here "we are hopeful that the convicts will be hanged this month and justice will be finally delivered to us after a long wait." Their lawyer said they would be moving a fresh application in Delhi court for fixing a fresh date for the hanging of the four convicts and hoped this would be the final date. (UNI)
