New Delhi, Mar 3 : The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued show cause notice against firecracker manufacturers in Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu for using Barium Nitrate and other banned chemicals in their products in violation of its orders.
During the course of hearing of petitions seeking a pan-India ban on sale of firecrackers, a threejudge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde, directed CBI station in Chennai to probe the issue and report back to the court in six weeks when it will again take up the matter.
Apex Court also wanted to know from the Central Bureau of Investigation how these firecracker firms in Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu had allegedly used Barium Nitrate in their products in violation of its years-old orders. On environmental grounds, Apex Court had directed that no firecrackers manufactured by the respondents shall contain the chemicals in any form, whatsoever. The court had tasked Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organisation to ensure compliance. (UNI)
