New Delhi, Feb 28 : The Supreme Court, on Friday, held as breach of the law, strike by advocates of Uttarakhand on all working Saturdays for the past three decades in Dehradun, Haridwar & Udham Singh Nagar area in the state.
A single bench of Justice MR Shah termed "illegal" the shutdown by lawyers for the past 35 years on every Saturday in three districts of Uttarakhand on flimsy grounds such as bomb blast in Pakistan school and earthquake in Nepal.
In its verdict, Apex Court said the 35-year-old stir on all working Saturdays amounts to contempt of court. The bench heard detailed submissions and arguments from all the petitioners and respondents in the matter. It ruled, "Uttarakhand lawyers' strikes on all working Saturdays in Dehradun, Haridwar & Udham Singh Nagar area in the state is illegal.
This court asks and directs the Bar Council of India and State Bar Council to take appropriate steps and directions against those persons involved in strike on Saturday in these particular areas." (UNI)
