New Delhi, Feb 14 : Hours after the Supreme Court slammed the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for putting on hold recovery of dues from telecom companies, the department in a fresh notice ordered the firms like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, to clear their dues before Friday midnight.

Earlier in the day, the apex court warned that it would initiate contempt proceedings against telecom companies and government officials for not complying with it's order to recover about Rs 92,000 crores, from the telecos.

The Top Court expressed its displeasure over the way the Adjusted Gross Revenue amount was not paid to the Central government. "With reference to the subject of payment of outstanding dues of Licence fee, Spectrum Usage Charges, Telecom Service Providers are here by directed to make the payment of outstanding dues of LF and SUC by 14.02.2020, 2359 hrs", the department order said which was addressed to all TSPs uner UP (West) Telecom Circle, Meerut.

Soon after SC's rap, the Telecom Department first cancelled its earlier order which protected the defaulting telecom companies from coercive action and then issued a new order. (UNI)
