Cannot block public road indefinitely: SC to Shaheenbagh protesters

Agency News

New Delhi, 10 Feb 2020: The Supreme Court on Monday said that the Shaheen Bagh protesters cannot block public road indefinitely and create inconvenience for others. But at the same time, the SC was reluctant to pass on any orders on Monday.

The top court’s response came on a number of petitions seeking the removal of anti-CAA protesters from Shaheen Bagh. The apex court also fixed the next date of hearing is on February 17.

The Supreme Court had earlier said it will hear the pleas seeking removal of anti-CAA protestors from Shaheen Bagh after the Delhi Assembly elections as it did not want to "influence" the polls. The Supreme Court has issued notices to Centre, Delhi government and police on pleas seeking removal of protesters from Shaheen Bagh as it refused to pass orders on Monday.

While asking the petitioners to wait till the matter is heard, the bench observed it would be appropriate if the matter is dealt with by the Delhi High Court.
