New Delhi, Jan 17 : Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani on Friday wholly blamed the Aam Aadmi Party Government for delay in carrying out in a time bound manner the death penalty awarded to the four death row convicts of the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case after the apex court dismissed their review petition in July 2018.
Asking whether the prison department, which came under the AAP government, was "sleeping" after the dismissal of review petition on July 9, 2018, the minister trained her guns on the Arvind Kejriwal Government, saying "Why did the government give Rs 10,000 and a sewing kit to the juvenile rapist when he was released? Didn't they see tears of Nirbhaya's mother?" she questioned. "I want to tell the Aam Aadmi Party that after the rejection of the review petition, because of you the convicts couldn't be hanged in time.
Such parties should be shamed - this is not only my party's view but also of every law-abiding citizen of the country," she charged. However, any hopes of last moment clemency for the four convicts were dashed on Friday with the President rejecting the mercy petition filed by one of the Nirbhaya gang rape convicts Mukesh Singh.
The presidential rejection of the mercy petition on Friday came after the Union Home Ministry forwarded the mercy petition to Rashtrapati Bhavan, recommending its rejection, the sources said. With this the death knell has been sounded on the nearly seven-year-old high-profile case, which ironically was a fast track case due to the publicity it earned. (UNI)
