The Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government on Thursday rejected the mercy plea of Mukesh, one of the convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya case.

The mercy plea is now under the consideration of Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Mercy peition was submitted before the Delhi Government after a Delhi court ruled to hang all four convicts of the sensational 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail. Delhi court’s ruling was based on a plea submitted by Nirbhaya’s mother after the Supreme Court rejected the plea of two of the four rapists in the Nirbhaya case against death penalty.

The convicts were sentenced to death penalty for raping a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus in the national capital on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012. The victim, who was later given the name Nirbhaya, had succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Singapore where she had been airlifted for medical treatment.
