New Delhi, Jan 16: The BJP on Thursday targeted the AAP regime in Delhi for delaying the 'hanging' of the convicted in the Nirbhaya rape case, and flayed the Congress for making mockery of the democracy by protecting the perpetrators of 1984 riots.
'The culprits of the Nirbhaya case haven't been hanged yet is only because of AAP's callous nature. The Supreme Court had denied their appeal back in 2017 and had punished them to be hanged till death,' BJP leader and Union Minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters here. "Why did the AAP government in Delhi delayed the process....people will question them on these," he said, maintaining that there' is still time to appeal. 'Who gave this additional time?,' he asked. "The negligence of AAP government is solely responsible for delaying the process," he said in reference to observation made by the Delhi government counsel in the Delhi High Court that the hanging of the four convicts in the infamous gang rape case will not held on the scheduled date of January 22, 2020 as the execution could take place only 14 days after the rejection of the mercy petition. Mr Javadekar said Rahul Mehra, Delhi Government's lawyer, stood up in the Court and said that the hanging cannot take place on January 22. The entire country wants the four accused to be hanged, and they are delaying it, he said.
Mr Javadekar alleged that the complicity from Aam Aadmi Party in providing the detailed legal procedure to Tihar Jail for 2.5 years shows the side Delhi Government is taking - with the rapists and murderers. The BJP leader also slammed the Congress for the anti-Sikh mayhem of 1984 and said the grand old party has always backed the 'rioters'. 'This was a mockery of our country's democracy done on purpose by Congress. Such a massive genocide took place and all Congress did was protect the perpetrators. And thus, FIRs were not registered at the right time,' he stated. 'The police did not act because the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in a way justified- 'When the big tree falls, earth tremors',' the BJP leader said, adding that perpetrators of anti-Sikh genocide were unpunished as authorities and police showed lack of interest in investigation.
