Agency News

Shillong, Jan 2: Lone National People’s Party (NPP) Lok Sabha member, Agatha K. Sangma is likely to be inducted as a Minister of State in the BJP-led NDA government.

Sources said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to expand his cabinet in the last week of January. There was no cabinet expansion after the Modi government came to power for the second time on May 30, 2019. Sources close to the BJP said that Sangma, the three-time member may be inducted as the third minister from the Northeast. When contacted about her possibility of being inducted in the Union Cabinet, Sangma termed it as “rumour”.

At present, there are two ministers in Modi’s government from the northeast — Kiren Rijiju and Rameswar Teli. Rijiju is the Minister of State with Independent charge Sports and Youth Affairs, while Teli is Minister of State for Food processing. Sangma, the youngest daughter of former Lok Sabha Speaker, Purno Agitok Sangma defeated former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma in Tura parliamentary seat by a margin of 1,15,234 votes. She is the youngest sister of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Home Minister James K. Sangma.

Sangma received her LLB degree from the Pune University. She did her Masters in Environmental Management at the University of Nottingham in the UK. She was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Tura in 2008 when she won a by-election after her father had decided to join state politics. (UNI)
