New Delhi, Dec 4 : Hours after the Supreme Court granted bail to the former Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the INX-Media alleged money laundering case, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday termed the veteran party leader's 106-day judicial custody "vengeful and vindictive".
Thanking the apex court for granting bail to Mr Chidambaram, Mr Gandhi has also expressed confidence that the former will be able to prove his innocence in a fair trail. "Mr P Chidambaram’s 106 day incarceration was vengeful and vindictive. I am glad that the SC has granted him bail. I am confident that he will be able to prove his innocence in a fair trial", Mr Gandhi tweeted.
Earlier in the day, a three-member Supreme Court bench, headed by Justice R Banumathi granted bail to the former Union Minister, which was denied by the Delhi High Court in November. The 74-year-old Chidambaram has been in custody since August 21, after he was arrested by the CBI in the INX-Media case.
The Enforcement Directorate had also arrested him on October 16 in the money laundering case and he was lodged in Tihar jail. "Truth finally prevails", the Congress responded to the release of Mr Chidambaram. Earlier Congress president Sonia Gandhi and recently, Mr Gandhi and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had also visited the former Union Minister in Tihar jail.
Mr Chidambaram's son and Lok Sabha member Karti Chidambaram has said that his father will attend the Parliament session on Thursday. "Mr Chidambaram will be in Parliament session tomorrow at 11am", he responded to media persons. (UNI)
