New Delhi, Dec 2: The teachers and students staged a sit-in protest in front of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) on Monday, over the increase in hostel fees of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Hundreds of teachers and students gathered in front of Shastri Bhawan with placards and banners in hand, raising slogans against the government. The Jawaharlal Nehru Teachers Association had written a letter to HRD Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and asked for an appointment with him, but till now he has not given time, due to which there is deep anger among the teachers. The Ministry had recently constituted a high-level committee to resolve the issue of JNU.
But JNU teachers and students are adamant on the issue of hostel fees. The university had partially cut the hostel fees, but the students are demanding to withdraw it completely. When the teacher of JNU reached Shastri Bhavan around 1600 hrs, the police stopped them near the Press Club of India. These teachers and students sat on the road and started protesting and shouting slogans. Police surrounded them from all the sides and security was tightened.
The teachers said that due to the confrontational attitude of the JNU Vice Chancellor, the crisis in the university has deepened, so he should resign. Teachers were shouting slogans of 'sack the Vice Chancellor' and 'stop selling education'. (UNI)
