New Delhi, Nov 28 : The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved the order on the bail application filed by senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in INX-Media money laundering case.

"We are reserving the order in the bail application by the petitioner accused, P Chidambaram. We heard the arguments and submissions from all the respective parties, petitioners, respondents and investigating agency in the case," a bench of of the Apex Court, headed by Justice R Banumathi, and also comprising Justices AS Bopanna and Hrishikesh Roy said.

The Court directed the Registry to keep all the sealed covers submitted by the ED in safe custody. Opposing the bail plea of Chidambaram, the ED told the Apex Court that the former FM is so powerful that he continues to have substantial control' over crucial witnesses even when in custody and will certainly try to 'tamper with evidence and influence witnesses' if allowed to get out on bail.

Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta, appearing for the ED, said three witnesses had refused to turn up before the ED. These witnesses had stated that accused and his family had pressurised them not to appear before the ED. "There cannot be a better example of a person’s ability to threaten and influence witnesses," Mehta submitted to the Apex Court. (UNI)
