New Delhi, Nov 27 : Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday moved a bill so that Special Protection Group is given only to the Prime Minister and members of his family who live officially with him at his residence.
'I have come here with an amendment in Special Protection Group (SPG) Act. After the amendment, under this Act, SPG cover will be given only to the Prime Minister and members of his family who live officially with him at the PM's residence,' said Mr Shah while piloting the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Lok Sabha.
SPG secures the Prime Minister across the nation, he said.
Shah said the government works under the Prime Minister and in many countries like the US, Israel and France, such provisions exist for the head of the state.
SPG cover will also be given to a former Prime Minister and his family, living at a residence allotted by the government, for a period of five years, the Home Minister said, adding that this is in line with the dignity, institution and office of the Prime Minister.
The statement of objects and reasons of the Bill say it is 'considered to amend the Act to focus on core mandate, as the security of the Prime Minister, as Head of the Government, is of paramount importance for Government, governance and national security.' (UNI)
