New Delhi, Nov 25: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari on Monday visited former Finance Minister P Chidambaram in Tihar jail, who is currently lodged there in connection with the INX-Media alleged corruption case.
Mr Chidambaram's son and Lok Sabha MP Karti Chidambaram also accompanied Mr Tharoor and Mr Tewari. Mr Tharoor said that Mr Chidambaram is showing great dignity and grace under considerable pressure. "He looked strong and in good spirits. But what a travesty his 98 days of imprisonment are. It’s Constitution Day tomorrow; where is Chidambaram’s right to liberty? What signal does it send about our democracy?", Mr Tharoor tweeted after the meeting.
Speaking to mediapersons outside jail, the Thiruvananthapuram MP said that the prolonged detention of P Chidambaram is both unnecessary and speaks poorly of our system. Mocking the charges against Mr Chidambaram of having taken Rs 9.96 lakh as bribe, Mr Tewari said that the former Union Minister is the country's topmost lawyer and if he needs this amount of money, he can get it for appearing for a client for 10 seconds in the courts.
Referring to the fact that the Supreme Court will take up Mr Chidambaram's bail plea, Mr Tewari said, "He has been imprisoned for 98 days. It’s a reminder for everyone who believes in free speech. But efforts to silence will not mask the failures of Narendra Modi government. Hope Supreme Court will do justice". He also added that Mr. Chidambaram's poise, dignity and courage in face of relentless persecution is amazing.
"Tomorrow is Constitution day- essence of Constitution is protection of individual liberty. Hope Courts take acute cognizance of this founding ideal", he added. Earlier, Congress president Sonia Gandhi had also visited Mr Chidambaram in Tihar jail. Mr Chidambaram is lodged there since more than three months after having been arrested by the CBI and later the Enforcement Directorate. UNI
