New Delhi/Mumbai, Nov 23: Shocked by the midnight coup in Maharashtra, the Congress on Saturday termed the early morning swearing-in of BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis as Chief Minister and NCP’s Ajit Pawar as Deputy Chief Minister in the state an ‘illegal' affair and said that the ‘illegitimate formation will self destruct’.
“Illegal and evil manoeuvres take place in the secrecy of midnight. Such was the shame that they had to do the swearing in hiding. This illegitimate formation will self destruct, ``senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel tweeted , who was leading the discussion from Congress side to form the government in Maharashtra with NCP and the Shiv Sena. 'This is a mockery of the constitution", said another senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh and added that the BJP did the same in Goa, Meghalaya and other states.
"I want to ask that did the government received Jayant Patil letter and does it have the signature of all the MLA's...? Before the elections Prime Minister Modi says ‘na khaunga na khane dunga', but now it looks like 'khoob khao and khoob khilao'. AICC communication in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala said the Maharashtra development was the “betrayal of people’s mandate and giving contract for killing democracy”.
Tagging an older tweet by Mr Fednavis, in which he had said the BJP will never ally with the NCP, as it is ‘corrupt’ party, Mr Surjewala also said, "Lust for power washes away principles and corruption," . 'It has now been proved that the BJP has destroyed country's democracy. The governor has once again proved to be Shah's 'hitman'' Mr Surjewala tweeted in Hindi. Expressing shock over the developments, party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said it was like ‘surreal’ and ‘thought it was a fake news’.
"Surreal what I read about Maharashtra. Thought it was fake news. Candidly and personally speaking, our tripartite negotiations should not have gone on for more than 3 days...took too long. Window given was grabbed by fast movers. Pawarji tussi grt ho! Amazing if true, still not sure "he tweet in the early morning.
Hours after, Mr Singhvi, however ‘clarified’ his earlier tweet and said, "My tweet at 0845 am today while in a taking off flight to Ahmdabad has, hopefully, been overtaken by events in view of Sharadji's clarification. Even then I had called it surreal and possibly fake news. Appears that fakeness of full NCP joining BJP is true as per Pawar’s clarification.”
Earlier in the day, NCP Chief Sharad Pawar had said his nephew Ajit Pawar’s decision was ‘personal’ and the party has not supported it. “Ajit Pawar’s decision to support the BJP to form the Maharashtra government is his personal decision and not that of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). We place on record that we do not support or endorse this decision of his”, Mr Pawar tweeted. UNI
